Racing Cane 6k/3k/1k

Date: September 18, 2010
Time: 8:00 AM
Location: Mountain View High School – 645 W. Center Street, Orem

Welcome to the 2010 Racing Cane 6k, 3k and 1k kids race. Why the unusual distances? This race benefits children in the Dominican Republic who travel an average of 3 kilometers each way to school – many without shoes on their feet.

Run13 and the Racing the Cane Foundation are committed to improving the lives of these children in the Dominican Republic’s sugarcane fields. Our goal is to encourage family involvement in raising funds and shoes. At the finish line runners will have the opportunity to donate their unwanted shoes. In the Spring of 2011 we will journey to the Dominican Republic to distribute the shoes and host a free running event for the children there. Part of your registration fee will go towards sponsoring Dominican children to join English academies, as those who speak English have a greater chance of attaining further education, becoming employed, and thus breaking out of the sugarcane fields. We believe that education and enterprise can help stop the cycle of poverty and give these children the option of a better life. Come join us and the Racing the Cane Foundation for this important event.

*All kids who sign up for the 1k kids race will be chip timed, receive a race shirt and finisher band, and will enjoy the same party and race atmosphere as the rest of the runners!

This Year’s Event strives to fulfill 3 purposes:

  1. Family Fun – Providing an event the entire family can enjoy while also supporting a worthy cause. In the name of Fun, we will have the Run13 usual suspects: bounce houses, music, food, and more. Oh, and one more cool tid bit – ever wanted to finish a race inside of a football stadium? This one ends in Mountain View High School’s Bruin Bowl!
  2. Gifting shoes – by donating your old running shoes, you will be enabling children in the Dominican Republic to finish a similar race in the Spring of 2011.
  3. Education – This race will help generate funds which will allow children in the Dominican Republic to attend English speaking schools and help further their education.
